Dr. Parry Aftab and Her Management Team [cont...]
As one of the first cyberlawyers in the world, she helped create Internet law and, as an expert to government and regulators, has helped fashion it. She has testified before and briefed US Congress, the FTC, UK Parliament, the Privacy Commissioner of Ontario and the Media Development Authority in Singapore, among others. Her charitable organization received a silver medal from the White House in 1998 for its contributions to cybersafety. Her books on Internet safety were translated into 15 languages and special editions were written for Spain, Singapore, China and the UK, as well as the US. And she is an award-winning journalist for Information Week, as "The Privacy Lawyer." Her blogs are read by millions of people every month, as well. Dr. Aftab is the “real deal,” as real as you can get.
Most recently, Parry Aftab was appointed, through her charity, to join the twenty member Internet Safety Technology Task Force formed under the agreement between MySpace and 49 Attorneys General in the US to investigate safety and risk management solutions for the Web 2.0 industry.
When Parry Aftab turns her focus to a problem, expect solutions that work and make sense. Her clients know that and so do the leaders in the Web 2.0 industry. Disney first turned to Dr. Aftab ten years ago when building their interactive game, ToonTown, and continues to seek her expertise. And AOL, Conde Nast, Microsoft, Yahoo!, Facebook, Xanga, Bebo, Piczo, Tagged, Marvel, Johnson & Johnson, Princess Cruise lines, the Motion Picture Association of America, RuneScape, Google and a multitude of other respected household brand names have entrusted her when safety is concerned. Parry Aftab is credible and most importantly, is credible with the people who matter - the Web 2.0 industry leaders.
What others have to say about WiredTrust, its founder and its expertise
- Facebook’s Chief Safety and Privacy Officer said that “Parry Aftab is among the leading experts in the world on safety and best practices. Facebook has looked to her for guidance from the beginning.” And Bebo’s founders, Michael and Xochi Birch, call her “invaluable to safety and someone who was with Bebo, helping them understand how to become safer, from its start.”
- Jules Polonetsky, AOL’s Chief Privacy Officer, described Parry as “part super-mom, part wonder-woman and part Oprah.”
- The former President of the UN General Assembly, Stoyan Ganev praised her for “understanding what parents need and want to know.”
- Ontario’s Privacy Commissioner, Ann Cavoukian, sees her as a “valuable resource in cybersafety and privacy.”
- Parry Aftab was identified as “the leading expert in cybercrime in the United States” by the Boston Herald.
- Parry's “sound, balanced approach to children’s online safety” was praised by The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
- Vinton Cerf “The Father of the Internet” calls Dr. Aftab “the quintessential, responsible Internaut.”
But no matter what others have to say about her, her clients just see her as “Parry” and someone who can answer hard questions, easily. She understands the Internet risks better than anyone else in the field and can help companies do what’s right and keep their eye on their business at the same time. (See her One-Pager Bio contained in the Appendix for more information about Dr. Aftab.)
Her Team of Experts
In addition to Parry Aftab, WiredTrust will turn to other leaders in the field. Child Internet sexual exploitation prevention experts, such as Linda Criddle (formerly Microsoft’s expert in their fight against online sexual predator practices) and Peter Cassidy, head of the Anti-Phishing Working Group (the leading expert group in the world on phishing and online scams) have agreed to work with WiredTrust and Dr. Aftab in this venture. Allan McCullough, founder of Child Safety Research and Innovation Centre, an NGO in Canada, will lend his expertise in gaming, safety and instructional design.
Kelli Emerick, founder and CEO of 121 Government Relations in Washington, DC, will assist in providing government relations insight and services. And Catherine Bolton, former Executive Director of the Public Relations Society of America will provide PR guidance.
Pace University in New York is working with WiredTrust to create a certification program and courses on risk-management in Web 2.0 and discussing adding more highly-respected educational institutions to the WiredTrust Institute strategic partnership. Alejandro Pisanty, one of the foremost academic leaders worldwide on the Internet and former member of the Board of Directors of ICANN will help guide WiredTrust’s development in the Spanish-speaking world. Art Wolinsky, one of the leading technology educators in the US, will assist in designing tutorials and training.
Sammy Pearson, who heads Community Management Services, comes from the MMOG space, where she helped RuneScape develop its safety policies and procedures.
Dr. Aftab has gathered these and others to collaborate on creating solutions for the Web 2.0 industry members and best practices under the WiredTrust brand. And the list is growing daily of experts who want to join.
But while WiredTrust may start with Dr. Aftab, it will not be limited to her by any means. WiredTrust will be the lightening rod for Web 2.0 safety and privacy expertise. It will build from what Dr. Aftab has already accomplished and add to it. Like the Web 2.0 industry it serves, WiredTrust will tap the unlimited possibilities of the technology for collaboration; creativity and communication, in helping a fledgling industry mature responsibly.
