A Message from Dr. Parry Aftab, WiredTrust's founder and Managing Director

Making sure the Internet is safe, takes different types of expertise. The families need to know what to do and be involved in using the right tools and good judgment. The technology providers and widget designers need to build in safer features and educate their users on more private and secure use of these products. Community services and moderators need to be screened, trained and supervised to be able to do their jobs in moderating the networks. The Internet industry needs to understand and professionalize risk management and think about safety as an integral part of their business model and network designs. Safety, privacy and security can’t be after-thoughts. They have to be built-in early in the game. Retooling is time consuming and expensive. It’s even more expensive if poor planning and failing to put the safety of your users first costs you investors, advertisers and your reputation as a trustworthy player.

I have been protecting people on the Internet for thirteen years. Initially as one of the first Internet privacy and security lawyers in the world, when I protected some of the global leaders online; later as the founder and unpaid Executive Director of the world’s largest cybersafety group – WiredSafety.org. Governments, the media, business leaders and policymakers turn to me for advice on best practices, safety and Internet privacy. WiredTrust brings my two professional worlds together, by combining risk management with safety and trust. In my vision of the cyberworld, protecting corporations and businesses has to start with protecting their users. The most dynamic widget or network will fail if its users are exposed to unnecessary risks. Responsible companies are trusted ones. Safety is good for business. We just need to make sure it’s not the central message that obscures the business model or diverts management from their main task of creating a sustainable, stabile and successful business. That’s where we come in. Executives need to manage and build the business and turn to WiredTrust’s worldwide experts for what we do best – help them protect their users, their networks and their brand online.
